[MUSIC PLAYING] JAMES DANIERO: I'm James Daniero. I'm an otolaryngologist at the University of Virginia. I started out, I wanted to be a pediatric oncologist. And so ended up very far away from that. I ended up in the operating room and found out that I just love surgery, but I also didn't want to give up the ability to treat patients medically. So otolaryngology for me was a good fusion of the two, to be able to balance medicine and surgery and take care of the patient. The most exciting thing within my field has been the new development of office procedures. And it has radically changed the way we do things as otolaryngologists and the ability to provide care in the clinic that would normally require extensive or more invasive procedures in the OR. Often, patients will come to me socially isolated because they either can't speak, they can't eat and interact socially through meals, or they can't breathe and they have a tracheotomy tube in place. And my goal is to help restore their quality of life by treating their symptoms. And patients can come and often get diagnostic procedures and treatment in the same day they have their initial visit.
