I'm Ken Brayman and I am the Director of the Kidney, Pancreas and Islet Transplant Programs at the University of Virginia Health System. We see patients that have end stage renal disease and also have diabetes. We evaluate patients that have progressive problems with their kidneys and also people who have problems with their glucose control. The wonderful thing about transplantation is that people have end stage organ disease and by virtue of a surgery and getting a new organ, they get a new lease on life and that's just an incredible thing to be participating in. The Transplant Center at the University of Virginia is clearly one of the best in the country. It's the only comprehensive Transplant Center in the state of Virginia. We pride ourselves on individualizing care and taking care of the individual. Not only the patient, but the whole family. I love coming in and meeting patients and learning about their stories. We do talk about medicine and the surgeries and so forth, but we also talk about life. We talk about what our purpose is, which is to help the patient navigate the particular journey that they're on to get better. In that way, it's a very warm environment and a warm relationship. I cherish the relationships that we have with our patients because they're just so unique. It basically makes caring for other people very fulfilling.
