I'm Ken Norwood. I'm a Developmental Pediatrician at the University of Virginia. My subspecialty within the field of pediatrics is taking care of children who have neurodevelopmental disabilities. That includes children who have ADHD, learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders. My care philosophy is to look at the whole situation. The whole family. You cannot understand why a child is functioning the way he or she is without understanding the context within which that child is functioning. We're very big proponents at UVA of what's called family-centered care where we spend a lot of time trying to better understand the family context that the child lives in. The most rewarding thing is the parents and the kids. I love my job. I look forward to coming to work every day. The kids put a smile on my face. Helping the children to be more functional in the world, helping the parents to better understand what's happening with their children, and to help their children to be more successful in the world, those things are very, very gratifying.
