My name is Leigh Cantrell, I'm a GYN Oncologist. I take care of women with gynecologic malignancies, so cervical, uterine, ovarian cancers, and I see them at the Emily Couric. I was fortunate to train in Chapel Hill, where the man that trained me was a pioneer in robotic surgery, and so that has become my niche, and really why I came to UVA. New patients are usually very scared, because they've just been told that they have a cancer diagnosis, and so I think a lot of the first visit with me, is understanding what to expect, what the next steps are, and the kind of a long term plan as far as what it will mean to have the cancer that they have, and taking care of them. My satisfaction in taking care of patients is really taking care of them in the way that I would hope my family would be taken care of, and feeling at the end of the day that they leave, even knowing that they have cancer, but that someone is taking good care of them. UVA has a phenomenal group of physicians that care about patients, and I think that one of my favorite reasons for coming to work every day is my colleagues, and so I think patients can expect to get quality care here. I'm passionate about taking of patients. I love my job.
