My name is Nick Teman, and I'm a Cardiac Surgeon at the University of Virginia. I specialize in all aspects of adult cardiac surgery. I see patients with coronary artery disease, valvular disease, aortic disease, as well as patients with heart failure, patients needing a mechanic circulatory support device or patients who need a transplantation of their heart. What I'm really passionate about is taking patients who feel like they have no other recourse, they have no other options, and providing them with a service that gives them quality and quantity of life. I think the really unique thing about UVA is our multidisciplinary approach to medical problems. I work hand in hand with cardiologists, with pulmonologists, with radiologists, and we all work together to figure out the best solution for the patient. That solution isn't always surgery, but when it it is I'm happy to assist with that. When I see a new patient in my clinic I really try to understand their motivations and what their desired outcomes are. Patients come see me that have significant issues with their quality of life. I like to understand their relationship with their families and relationships with other loved ones, and what they hope to continue to do with their lives. And my goal is to bring them back to where they would like to be.
