I'm Philip Smith. I'm an endocrine surgeon at UVA. Endocrine surgery is a branch of general surgery, and we focus specifically on diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal. I do find it very rewarding being able to offer people definitive treatment in the form of surgery for problems that they have with usually very good results. The impact on the patient's life, we can usually fairly minimal. Some people feel dramatically better. Thyroid, adrenal, and parathyroid common problems are actually all very common. Most of them don't need surgery. My role really comes in at the decision making for when to operate on them. We have an excellent Department of Endocrinology. We've worked with them for many years. We can provide multidisciplinary care of diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal from initial identification of the problem through evaluation workup management. For many of these patients, they need long-term followup. Working as a team, we're able to provide that.
