IÕm Dr. Fern Hauck, and IÕm in the Department of Family Medicine here at the University of Virginia. I personally specialize in refugee medicine. So my own practice, specifically, is primarily of refugee patients. The majority of our refugees have come from war torn areas, have fled for their lives, or fear for their lives. So they have a very significant background with a lot of, potentially, a lot of emotional distress. The most significant experience in my medical career was the year that I spent working in a refugee camp in Thailand. I worked with Cambodian refugees who had fled across the border from Cambodia. No electricity, no running water, limited resources, but we did what we could and it was extremely rewarding. UVA is a top-notch academic medical center. It offers specialties, great access to the latest technology, the latest procedures for all of our patients. They can expect to get a very thorough history and physical with a very caring staff and providers. All of our nursing staff, front desk staff, physicians know how to work with refugees and use interpreters, and are trained in that. And so I think patients definitely tell us they feel very welcome, very comfortable, and feel that this is their medical home.
