Hi. IÕm Pamela Mason. I am one of the cardiac electrophysiologists here at the University of Virginia. IÕm the director of the pacemaker and defibrillator clinic. As a cardiac electrophysiologist, IÕm one of the physicians who specializes in heart rhythm disorders. And so I see patients with heart rhythms that are too slow, and those that are too fast. And I perform procedures, including pacemaker implantation, defibrillator implantation, and ablation procedures to get rid of fast heart rhythms. My interest in medicine comes mostly from my experiences with my fatherÕs illness when I was a child. My father suffers from a condition called atrial fibrillation, which is a heart rhythm disorder, and is one of the first things that made me interested in going into medicine, and then ultimately, to become a heart rhythm physician. When patients come to our clinic, they can expect comprehensive care for their condition. We often times will do procedures on the same day as their visit, usually imaging procedures, not invasive procedures. So we have comprehensive information so we can give them the best possible care plan when they come to see us. Patients with heart rhythm abnormalities tend to be very anxious and upset. These can be concerning conditions and the best part of my job is giving patients peace of mind, ensuring that they have treatment that makes them feel like theyÕre safe and can have good quality of life.
