My nameÕs Joseph Carrera. IÕm a clinical instructor in the Department of Neurology, and so I see patients with a variety of diseases and disorders affecting the brain. And then as a vascular neurologist, I specialize particularly in patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. ThereÕs a variety of treatments for stroke, both medical and procedural. As a vascular neurologist, we spend the bulk of our time assessing and evaluating patients acutely, and then deciding which treatment modalities are most appropriate for them and getting the right personnel in there to help deliver those treatments. In medicine, specifically, IÕve always been really fascinated by science and how the body works, and then not only that, but the ability to help patients and people, day in and day out, to be their healthiest and at their best is something thatÕs really an appealing aspect of medicine for me. Early on in my residency training, my grandfather actually suffered a relatively disabling stroke, and so I saw firsthand, not only the challenges that he faced, but the challenges that my entire family faced. And so I think that every patient and family that I see, I try and keep that in the back of my memory and try and treat them as if theyÕre my own family. UVA was actually recently named a comprehensive stroke center. So, weÕre only one of three hospitals in Virginia thatÕs achieved that designation. ItÕs the highest designation that a hospital can receive from the joint commission American Heart/American Stroke Association.
