IÕve been involved with developing cancer screening guidelines since early on in my career. And colorectal cancer is a particular interest of mine, because it is such a common cancer, and it is the second leading cause of cancer death in this country. ItÕs also highly preventable. One question arises is why is colorectal cancer such a deadly cancer? And, honestly, a big part of that is that for folks who arenÕt getting screened, weÕre only finding the cancer after symptoms occur. After the patient starts to bleed, or develops abdominal pain. And the point is that screening for colorectal cancer is highly effective, and can find cancer in its earliest stages, when it is relatively easily curable. We can also find polyps, which are precancerous growths, before they even turn into cancer, remove them, and prevent the cancer from even developing. So, there is a real bright side to colorectal cancer early detection and screening, but people do need to get screened. UVA offers all options for colorectal cancer screening. So, if folks want to get a colonoscopy, we have many experts here who are very highly trained at performing high-quality, safe colonoscopies. If they would rather have a stool-based test, we have the option of fecal immunochemical testing here, which is one of the best tests for colorectal cancer screening. We have the virtual colonoscopy here, the CT scan, and we do have flexible sigmoidoscopy. If colon cancer is detected through screening, UVA also has a team of colorectal cancer specialists who can provide comprehensive care for the patients who are diagnosed with colon cancer.
