Many centers in this country can provide exemplary care, but very few will see you as an individual. At UVA, I believe that doctors take care of you, not your disease. They think about your family. They think about what you go through to get here, and we want to make the patient experience the best it can possibly be. University of Virginia offers a multi-disciplinary option for patients who have especially complex skin cancers. We can work as a team and bring a very comprehensive, collaborative effort to achieve very good outcomes, even the more complex patients. I think itÕs important to know that youÕre seeing a dermatologist who is really up to date on the literature, is familiar with your condition, and is passionate about what theyÕre doing. I also think itÕs important to find a person that you think that you are going to click with because, certainly, youÕre with your dermatologist for an extended period of time, and so we like to make sure that relationships are important to that care. Most patients in dermatology come in for something that they or their provider has seen in their skin, but also think about all the other things that may not be related to the skin. We think about what medications they take, what allergies they have, and then we do a very close exam. I have patients that IÕve had since the first day IÕve worked, and thatÕs part of the most rewarding thing that I do at UVA is I see patients routinely, especially those that have a number of skin cancers or complex medical conditions that require medicines be monitored. And so, I see them back every three to six months and so theyÕre kind of like my family. I know about their kids. I know where they went on vacation, and they know about my family, and so it is really a relationship that builds over time.
