My name is Emaad Abdel Rahman. I am a kidney doctor and nephrologist here at the University of Virginia. We see all sorts of kidney disease patients here at the kidney clinic in the inpatient part. I am dealing more with dialysis patients and especially with trying to help with their symptoms. My main area of research and seeing patients is what's called geriatric nephrology, which is kidney diseases in the elderly. I became interested in medicine ever since I was young because I had a good part of my early life in the hospitals being a patient myself and a kidney patients myself. So, I’ve been, if fact, I’ve planned on being a kidney doctor from the beginning, from a very early age. I am most passionate about really the quality of life of our patients. Really taking care of how they feel. People with acute kidney injuries, whether they acquire temporary dialysis or not, the best day is when they are taken off the machine. And the day that they recover their kidney function, we tell them, “You no longer need to come to dialysis.” That’s really really rewarding.
