My name is Firas El Chaer and I am a hematologist at UVA. I see patients who have blood cancers, particularly patients who have acute leukemias. Either it's acute myeloid leukemia or acute lymphoblastic leukemia. And I see patients with bone marrow failures as well. My particular interest for cancer care as well as blood cancers developed after my dad was diagnosed was Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Seeing that, the impact of that cancer on my family, on myself, on my dad, has pushed me to care for such patients as well as from my personal experience, kind of relate to their experiences. When I see my patients, I try to focus a lot on the communication with them and their family about their diagnosis, their expectations, as well as their treatment plan. as well as their treatment plan. We see them on a very regular basis. So you get to know them. You get to get involved with the families. It's very rewarding because you become part of their family while taking care of them as their doctor.
