If you have breast cancer, you have a much better chance of cure if it is caught early. If you're over 40, talk to your doctor about starting annual breast cancer screening with mammography. Getting a yearly mammogram improves your chances of catching a cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage. Breast cancer screening should continue as long as you are in good health. 3D mammography (or tomosynthesis)is the most accurate mammogram available and can be obtained at all UVA mammography locations. Dense breast tissue can make it harder to find cancer on a mammogram. Women with dense breast tissue may benefit from supplemental screening with ultrasound, contrast enhanced mammogram, or fast-MRI. If you're high risk, or have detected a lump, your doctor may recommend other screening options such as MRI. So talk to your doctor about the best option for you.
