Aesthetic surgery of the face often has two forms. One is to enhance a little bit of the appearance that currently exists. People want to improve the shape of their nose, shape of their lips, for example. The other form is to try to turn back the clock a little bit as it were, to help improve the youthfulness appearance and take away or reduce some of the signs of aging that we get in our faces. Office-type procedures, include things like injections, such as Botox injections to help with lines and creases, or facial filler to help improve the fullness of the cheeks or the lips or the jaw line. In the operating room, we will often augment the facial volume using fat injection, or a person's own fat is used to fill up their cheeks a little bit. We can also do procedures to help alleviate some of the signs of aging, such as neck lift or facelift to help with sagging soft tissues, or lifting the eyebrows or eyelashes to help improve the youthfulness look of the face and return that to what it once was. Sometimes people are hesitant to consider coming to a medical center for facial aesthetic surgery. They think about this more as the medical spa kind of treatment. But at the university, we have access to some of the latest technologies and cutting-edge research. And we also do a lot of reconstructive surgery. So the reconstructive surgery techniques we use pair very well with the aesthetic surgery techniques. So I think at UVA, we can offer the best of both worlds in that sense. Really the best way to know what works for you is to have a consultation where we can sit down, look at those options and talk about your goals. And we can examine your own facial anatomy to determine what you may or may not be a candidate for because everyone's face is different. So everyone will respond differently to these treatment options. And I can help select which one might be best for you.
