[MUSIC PLAYING] ABENA FOREMAN-TRICE: My name is Abena Foreman-Trice. And I was a patient here at the University of Virginia Health System Fibroid Clinic. I had several large fibroids that started causing major problems to the point that it interfered with the quality of my life. UVA Fibroid Clinic was recommended, and I made my appointment to come and started to go over my options. DANA REDICK: When Abena came in she had already done her research. She kind of knew about her fibroids, what her options were, and really wanted to get a sense of what new treatment possibilities were out there. We talk about, well, what if you don't do anything? What if we use medications to treat? Would you be interested in a what we call uterine artery embolization or focused ultrasound treatment or surgery? And surgery could be just removing the fibroid, which is called a myomectomy or a hysterectomy. ABENA FOREMAN-TRICE: Some of them I didn't qualify for because of my condition. Then there were some other options that I was able to choose from, myomectomy being one and then, of course, the full hysterectomy. I'm very blessed to have three children, and I knew that there would be no more children in my future. So that did to some degree play a role in my choice to have the hysterectomy. The care was wonderful. There was a lot of communication. I was very informed. I really appreciated having that knowledge going into the surgery. I really felt confident in what I was about to embark upon. I mean, the physicians, the surgeons, Dr. Redick, they were doing all the work. But for me, it was just a very easy and seamless experience. I would certainly recommend the Uterine Fibroid Clinic to anyone who's experiencing what I experienced.
