I'm Dr. Nishant Patel. I'm an assistant professor for the Department of Urology here at the University of Virginia Health System. I'm an endourologist and stone disease specialist. So I mostly see patients with kidney stones. I surgically manage kidney stones, and then we work on dietary and even medical prevention of kidney stones. Another large part of my practice is dealing with enlarged prostate in men, and specifically performing a procedure called HoLEP to remove the growth in very large prostate glands. I first developed an interest in medicine because my father is a doctor and I saw how hard he worked for his patients and the immense gratitude that patients had towards him. He's a cancer physician. So when patients were seeing him, it wasn't at the best point in their lives and he would certainly help them through this tough time. I would tag along with him at work and I would see how grateful his patients were for his care and from a young age that's what I wanted to embody. I wouldn't recommend anything to a patient that I wouldn't recommend to my own family. So I see this physician-patient relationship as more of a friendship really, because we both want the best possible outcome. I have a lot of gratitude for patients coming to me to solve their kidney stone problems or prostate problems.
