I'm Kenan Yount, and I'm a cardiac surgeon at the University of Virginia. I perform all types of adult cardiac surgery. My subspecialty is both on aortic disease and heart valve disease. When I first started off in med school, I really didn't know what I wanted to do, but IÕll never forget. I shadowed, early in my third year, one of our surgeons. I was just amazed at how heart surgery really, the impact that it had on patient's lives and how you could take somebody with such advanced heart disease and really extend their life. The cooperation I've seen between the heart surgeons and the cardiologists at UVA is really unparalleled. You can imagine with something as scary as heart disease, you want that opinion coming from a team. And that degree of collaboration between the multiple specialties we have here is something that, not only drew me to med school here, but it drew me to internship, residency, and fellowship, and later as a faculty member. Perhaps that my choice to be here for so long is a testament to what I feel like is what we have, which is the complete heart team.
