I'm Tim Rooney, and I'm one of the breast radiologists at the Breast Care Center at UVA. We see the people who may have a symptom and a lot of anxiety about a diagnostic mammogram, or even worse, a diagnosis. But we also see people who are asymptomatic, women of risk just by virtue of being women at a certain age, and we see those patients and we meet them where they are as breast specialists and bonding with our patients, making them our own and changing their visit from that, you know, hanging- off-the-ceiling anxiety to a “Wow, that was better than I thought it was going to be.” And really finding the bond with a patient. And honestly, that's where I feel like we do our best work. The screening patient comes in and gets great service every single time and gets a connection with a technologist. So whether or not I positively affect a patient or a trainee or a technologist or all of the above, that really makes my day when I can connect with those people on a one-on-one basis and make a positive impact in their learning, their patient care so that I can, you know, find ways to bring others up, then I'm happy.
