Kidney cancer is any abnormal growth or tumor in the normal kidney tissue. So UVA offers a wide range of treatments for kidney cancer ranging from ablative technology up to minimally invasive, robotic, as well as open approaches. Typically, patients don't have any symptoms when they have a kidney cancer unless the kidney cancer has grown to be very big. In which case they can bleed or have pain. Some risk factors for developing kidney cancer include certain genetic abnormalities, cigarette smoking, and certain chemicals can predispose people to developing kidney cancer. For minimally invasive approaches, such as robotic surgery, recovery can be fairly quick, with patients staying in the hospital for one to two days. At UVA, we work as a team in all aspects of patient care, and we all work very well together, even across surgical specialties and departments.
