Join the Mammography Research Project

UVA researchers hope to increase our ability to predict a woman’s risk for breast cancer based on her breast density.

Find out how you can join this ground-breaking study.

Experienced Treatment for Breast Cancer

Our radiation oncologists are the first in the area to offer brachytherapy to women who have had lumpectomies. With this innovative procedure, radioactive “seeds” are implanted to target cancer cells while sparing nearby healthy tissue.

We also have an extensive imaging area with the latest technology, including digital and film mammography, breast ultrasound, core-needle biopsies and needle localizations before breast surgery.

Our surgeons have specialty training in breast surgery and are committed to providing the latest and most proven prevention, diagnostic, treatment and reconstruction options, including lumpectomy, mastectomy, breast reconstruction and sentinel node biopsy (used to determine the extent of early spread of the disease).

Your Breast Health

Although there are no known causes of breast cancer, we can help you:

  • Assess your risk
  • Lead a healthy lifestyle
  • Follow screening recommendations for early detection
Take Care of Your Breasts

We suggest women follow these steps:

  • One baseline mammogram between the ages of 35 and 39
  • Routine mammograms every year from the age of 40
  • Monthly breast self exams starting at age 20

You should also get regular breast exams by a doctor:

    • Every three years between the ages of 20 and 40
    • Every year after the age of 40
