Bio & Overview
As a neurologist, Alex Elias, MD, specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions of the brain, nerves, and spine.
With each new patient encounter, Dr. Elias keeps an open mind, without jumping to conclusions, as he listens to patients’ experiences and concerns. If he is unsure about a diagnosis or best treatment options immediately, he keeps looking for answers using every method available – from conducting diagnostic tests and consulting the latest research to guiding patients to additional providers and resources that may be helpful.
“At the end of the day, I prefer to use shared decision-making with all my patients,” Dr. Elias says.
“I offer guidance based off of my knowledge and experiences but also respect the decisions that they make regarding their health.”
Born in Iowa and raised in Muncie, Indiana, Dr. Elias decided to go into medicine because the field provides opportunities to apply science and research in a way that directly impacts the lives of others each day.
“Medicine allows me to apply the subject matter that has always most interested me in a context that involves constant interactions with other people, which is a perfect mix for me,” Dr. Elias says.
“It also allows me to teach students and other learners, which has always been a passion of mine."
After earning his bachelor’s degree at Indiana University, Dr. Elias earned his medical degree at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 2019. He completed an internship in internal medicine, followed by a residency in neurology, at UVA.
Outside of work, Dr. Elias enjoys eating a meal on the Downtown Mall, exploring the many excellent breweries and wineries in the greater Charlottesville area, watching sports, or taking it easy with some take-out and Netflix.
