Bio & Overview

Amna Sohail, MD, is a board-certified vascular neurologist specializing in stroke diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Born in Pakistan, Dr. Sohail completed her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree at Shifa College of Medicine in Islamabad prior to pursuing a neurology residency in the U.S. at the University of Oklahoma. She then went on to complete a vascular neurology fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass.

Dr. Sohail grew up in a family of physicians, including her grandfather, mother, and aunt. “I saw firsthand their commitment, dedication and hard work as physicians and the joy it brought them. Their fulfillment making a positive impact in patients’ lives through their clinical work and advancement in science and healthcare processes was unparalleled. They were an inspiration for me to become a doctor,” she says.

It was her family and their travels across the globe that gave Dr. Sohail an early appreciation for different cultures, languages, and places. She has a strong desire to learn from others and work collaboratively to make things better. It is this humble outlook that shapes Dr. Sohail’s approach to patient care. “I actively listen to my patients to understand their values, social situation, and concerns,” she says. “I work with them to devise a plan both in line with their preferences and the best scientific evidence to date. My goal is not only to treat the disease process, but also help patients get access to the best care and help them achieve the best quality of life.”

Dr. Amna Sohail is one of the best doctors that I have seen at UVA over the years. When she came into the room, she already had reviewed my previous records in detail which saved time during the visit and provided her with novel insights. She is a good listener and history taker. She also did a detailed physical exam which helped to confirm her diagnostic impression. Doctors who do careful physical exams are rare these days. I left the visit more confident in my diagnosis and what things I should do on a daily basis to prevent falls caused by gait imbalance. I hope she continues to work at UVA for a long time.

They were more interested in Research and test drugs. I said numerous times, No to both and the Dr just kept repeating.
