Bio & Overview
Dr. Mihalek spent a large portion of his formative years in northern California. He was raised in San Jose, received his undergraduate degree in molecular and cellular biology from the University of California, Berkeley, and obtained his medical degree from UC Davis School of Medicine. Between college and medical school, he worked evaluating pregnancy prevention programs at the Institute for Health Policy Studies at the University of California, San Francisco, where he met his wife, Samira.
After residency and a chief resident year in internal medicine at Loyola University Medical Center, Dr. Mihalek completed his specialty training with a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Harvard. Before joining UVA, Dr. Mihalek spent time at the National Institutes of Health researching the mechanisms of smoking-related lung injury.
Dr. Mihalek currently oversees the pulmonary medicine curriculum for the UVA School of Medicine. His clinical time is spent leading the development of an acute pulmonary embolus response team and serving as one of the co-directors for the multidisciplinary UVA Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic.
Dr. Mihalek spends his time outside of work teaching his son how to throw a curve ball and trying to convince his daughter to not feed the family dog, Lucy, from the kitchen table.

My name is Andrew Mihalek. I'm a pulmonary and critical care physician here at UVA. Inside the hospital, I'm an attending in the Intensive Care Unit, where we see the sickest of the sick patients. As an outpatient doctor, though, I see patients who have diseases of their lungs, and that can come in all shapes and forms. So, I see people that have COPD, otherwise known as emphysema, or chronic bronchitis. I see people that have asthma. I see people that have abnormal findings on CAT scans or chest x-rays. Fifty percent of my time is actually spent taking care of patients that have pulmonary hypertension. I'm the Associate Medical Director for the multi-disciplinary pulmonary hypertension clinic here. When people come into the clinic, it's probably our first job and priority to get to know the patient. Our second job and priority is actually for the patient to get to know us. We have to be comfortable knowing that we're going to be delivering the best care possible to those patients, and the patients have to know that, and feel comfortable knowing, A, that they're going to get that care, but then, B, that care is going to revolve around them. I think one of the things that the patients can have comfort knowing when they come to our clinic is the fact that they're very much a part of their own care. We can make all the suggestions that we want, but the patient is the one who has to decide what's going to work best for them and their lives.
