Bio & Overview
Dr. Hoard serves as chair and medical director of the dentistry department at UVA Health. At both the 1222 JPA and Battle Building dental clinics, as well as Sports Medicine and the Sleep Disorders Center, he provides dental services that include his special interests in dentoalveolar trauma, sports dentistry — he provides mouthguards for UVA sports — and dental management of obstructive sleep apnea.
Born in Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, Dr. Hoard grew up mostly in Arlington. He attended the University of Richmond and earned his DDS at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. He came to UVA in 1978 for a residency in general practice dentistry, and joined the faculty after its completion.
Outside of work, Dr. Hoard is a gym rat and marathon runner. He’s completed 40 marathons, including running the Boston Marathon 13 times.
