Carolyn Saunders, WHCNP, is a certified nurse practitioner who focuses on women's health. She provides a wide range of care, including well-woman care, prenatal care, and contraception.

She enjoys helping people begin their journey to improve their daily lives, and not just “deal with” annoying issues such as incontinence, difficult periods, or hot flashes.

“I respect patients as the experts of their own bodies,” she shares. “My job is not to tell them what to do, but to work together to create a plan that improves their quality of life in a manner they desire.”

Carolyn was raised in a large family in Northern Virginia. It wasn't until college that she didn't live on the same road, or even next door, to extended family. “All of my sisters and I attended UVA and are proud Wahoos,” she shares.

She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UVA School of Nursing and started her nursing career on UVA Health's labor & delivery, antepartum, and postpartum hospital units. She pursued extra certifications in fetal monitoring (C-EFM) and lactation support (Certified Breastfeeding Specialist).

“I loved working with the OB/GYN team and supporting the diverse Charlottesville community,” she shares.

This experience led her to attend Frontier Nursing University for her Master of Science in Nursing to become a Women's Health NP.

She came back to UVA Health in 2023 after doing her graduate clinical training at private OB/GYN offices and a family practice in Northern Virginia, where she worked with other NPs, Certified Nurse Midwives, and OB/GYN doctors.

“I enjoy how the NP profession combines the heart of nursing and the expertise of medicine,” Carolyn shares. And like many Charlottesville locals, she “loves the city and the plethora of trails to explore here.”

Carolyn Saunders was exceptional in every aspect of what I had hoped for my first visit with her. She was thorough in her understanding of my medical history, in the questions she had and those she answered, in her explanation of my questions, what test results were and how to go forward with these results, and what I needed to walk away with a better understanding of my overall health. I've never had a physician take the time she did with a visit to make sure I felt heard. I felt like I was her main concern. Carolyn is a true example for every doctor at UVA to follow. One of the very best at UVA. I would highly recommend her!

Carolyn is absolutely fantastic. Her risk/benefit explanation was thorough and clear. She gives you time to think about the options, was never pushy, and really listened to my concerns and considerations. Her bedside manner is fantastic. She is always very thorough in my visits with her, provides all information in a clear and understanding way and always answers all the questions I have to ensure all of my needs are met coming out of my appointment. She is by far the best provider I have experienced for my GYNO appointments and very thankful to be a patient of hers.
