Bio & Overview

David Brenin, MD, FACS is the M.C. Wilhelm Professor in diseases of the breast and co-director of the University of Virginia Focused Ultrasound Cancer Immunotherapy Center. His clinical practice specializes in the treatment of breast cancer, and benign diseases of the breast.

Dr. Brenin is a fellowship-trained breast surgeon and is an expert on surgical procedures involving the breast including lumpectomy, sentinel node biopsy, axillary dissection, nipple sparing mastectomy and IORT. His primary research interests include focused ultrasound ablation of breast tumors and immunotherapy.

In addition to his clinical functions, Dr. Brenin is the leader of UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center’s weekly multidisciplinary breast conference, chairman of the Commission on Cancer Committee at UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center and member of the Focused Ultrasound Surgery Foundation’s Fellowship Advisory Committee and grant review committee. He serves on the UVA Health Tumor Registry Advisory Board and UVA Human Immune Therapy Center Committee. Dr. Brenin is also course co-director for the regional continuing medical education conference “Advances in Comprehensive Breast Care and Imaging,” in Charlottesville and is on the planning committee of the UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center educational series.

His professional affiliations include Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (breast team CORE committee member) and the American Society of Breast Surgeons. 

A native of New York, Dr. Brenin graduated from SUNY Binghamton in 1986. He earned his MD at New York Medical College in 1990 and completed his residency in surgery and fellowships in breast surgery at Northwestern University. Dr. Brenin’s wife, Dr. Christiana Brenin, also treats breast cancer at UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center and earned her medical degree, served her residency and completed her fellowships at the same locations as her husband, David.

Outside the hospital, Dr. Brenin enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters as well as hiking, skiing, scuba diving, playing with the family dog and maintaining an extraordinary fish tank.

I am sad that Dr Brenin is retiring and that this was my last visit with him. He was encouraging about my future health.

Dr David Brenin is the absolute best in his field. This comes from years of association and being under his care. His retirement is a a great loss to UVA and his profession but I wish him well and am indebted to him for his life giving care.
