Bio & Overview

Emmad Kabil, MD, is an anesthesiologist pursuing a fellowship in neuroanesthesia at UVA.

He is originally from Pawleys Island, South Carolina, the son of an American mother and Egyptian father, whose career as an executive chef took the family around the world.

As a child, Dr. Kabil lived in Egypt, Abu Dhabi, France, and Spain. It was his time in Egypt that inspired him to pursue a career in medicine.

“I lived in Egypt during the Arab Spring. I saw the turmoil and wanted to learn skills that would be useful to those around me,” he says.

“I had always enjoyed helping others, and had been volunteering since high school. This, plus my love for science, made medicine a top choice.”

Two years after completing his undergraduate degree at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, Dr. Kabil attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina. He was fortunate to match with his first choice for residency training: UVA.

About his chosen specialty, Dr. Kabil says: “I like anesthesiology because when we meet patients before surgery, they tend to be nervous and full of questions. I like to guide them through the sometimes-hectic experience of having surgery.”

In his free time. Dr. Kabil enjoys spending time with his wife and son, playing guitar and cooking challenges.
