Gwenalyn Garcia, MD, is a fellowship-trained hematologist and medical oncologist. She provides care for people with cancer, including lung and colon cancer.
Dr. Garcia was born and raised in the Philippines. She received her undergraduate degree in biology from Ateneo de Manila University and her medical degree from the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center in Manila, Philippines.
She completed her fellowship training in hematology and medical oncology at Staten Island University Hospital, part of Northwell Health. She practiced community hematology and medical oncology at Charleston Area Medical Center before joining UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center in 2021.
“I enjoy lifelong learning and innovation and applying knowledge to make a difference in people’s lives,” Dr. Garcia says. “I work collaboratively with patients to develop a treatment plan that aligns with their needs and values.”
Dr. Garcia enjoys traveling in her spare time.

Meet Hematologist and Oncologist Gwen Garcia, MD
My name is Gwen Garcia. I am a Hematologist and Community Medical Oncologist working out of the UVA Augusta Cancer Center in Fishersville, Virginia. Oncology is a rapidly developing field. There's always hope to give people in terms of new treatments, not just for cancer, but for cancer symptoms like pain and nausea. Well, I really enjoy being a physician in the community and being able to interact with all types of different patients. One of the things I'm really proud of working at the UVA cancer center, Augusta, is our patients are able to receive world-class cancer care close to home. When I meet a new patient, I take the time to get to know them because I think in the end, that's one of the most important things that matters, the patient's values and preferences, and that I think it's important that they have a say in what type of treatment they get.
