Bio & Overview

John Currie Mason, MD, cares for patients with diseases and disorders of the ear, including hearing loss, chronic infections and trauma. He is a faculty member in the UVA Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, president of the Virginia Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and is involved in many hospital committees.

Originally from Wilmington, North Carolina, Mason received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1992, he moved to Charlottesville, where he completed an internship and residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery and a fellowship in neurotology at UVA.

Mason is married with three children and is actively involved in his children’s school as a member of the Committee for Legal and Community Affairs. He has traveled to the Dominican Republic for mission work in years past. In his free time, Mason also enjoys running, reading, water skiing and spending time with his family.

I came to have wax removed from my ears. Dr. Mason was new to me. I felt I was cared for with respect and care. I was very nervous about having a new doctor. I was delighted with both his manner and the care I received.

Dr. Mason explained every step he was doing from the time meeting him and throughout the exam with explanation of diagnosis. He was very down to earth and explained every step of what he was looking at in my ear and what he saw in simple terms for me to understand.

A rating of just "very good" Is a disservice to Dr. Mason. He is outstanding in all areas- Knowledge, wisdom, insight, and experience. Then his sense of empathy and caring is simply marvelous. A kind doctor as well as an excellent one.
