Bio & Overview

Kaitlyn Amos, MS, LCGC, is a genetic counselor at UVA Health. She is a member of the UVA Health Cardiovascular Genetics team. She supports patients who have hereditary heart conditions, including genetic cardiomyopathies and heart failure, arrythmia (irregular heartbeat), cholesterol disorders, and vascular conditions.

Kaitlyn grew up in Waco, Texas. She earned her undergraduate degree at Baylor University, where she played collegiate soccer and studied speech communication and journalism. After graduation, she moved to Charlottesville to participate in a Leadership and Vocational Development Program. Then, she worked as an assistant to an economics professor at the University of Virginia.

In 2015, Kaitlyn was inspired to make a career transition after experiencing genetic counseling support as a patient. She completed prerequisite requirements and earned a master’s degree in genetic counseling from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (UT Health Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences).

UVA Health is special to Kaitlyn both personally and professionally. When she was a patient in 2015, she worked with UVA Health genetic counselor Matthew Thomas, ScM, GC.

“I feel incredibly grateful to get to return to Charlottesville and provide care for other patients with hereditary cardiovascular conditions, alongside Matthew Thomas and many other wonderful cardiology providers,” she said.

Her approach to care is patient-centered. Kaitlyn wants her patients to feel seen and heard, and to know that they are not alone in their experience.

“We work to help patients understand their diagnosis, the possible risks it creates for loved ones, and the preventative measures that can be taken to keep every family member as safe as possible,” she says.

Outside of work, Amos enjoys traveling to visit family and friends across the country. She also enjoys getting active outside, reading contemporary poetry, and locating and frequenting the best taco spots in town.
