Karen Ventura is a genetic counselor in the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine at UVA. She sees patients in the Fetal Care Center at UVA and through a telemedicine clinic with UVA Obstetrics and Gynecology Culpeper. She was certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling in 2010 and recertified in 2015.

Born and raised in southwest Pennsylvania, Ms. Ventura earned her undergraduate degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She started her career as a cytogenetic technologist at Magee-Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh and received a master’s in genetic counseling from the University of Pittsburgh in 1994.

After graduate school, she worked as a prenatal genetic counselor at Magee-Womens until 2004, when she joined UVA. She has been involved in the Virginia Association of Genetic Counselors since its inception and has served as secretary/treasurer and as a member of the board of directors.

Ms. Ventura has been married for 25 years to her husband, Bob, and they have two children. She enjoys spending time with her family, attending musicals and theatre and ballet productions, and travel.

Karen was very thorough in her assessment of our family histories and made great suggestions for genetic testing, including weighing in considerations like insurance coverage if we were to learn of a particular risk factor.
