Dr. Ring specializes in surgical and medical treatment for women who have gynecologic malignancies, including cervical, ovarian and uterine cancer.
She graduated magna cum laude from Washington and Lee University and received her medical degree at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She remained in Charlottesville, where she completed residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at UVA. She then completed fellowship training in gynecologic oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
In addition to treating patients with gynecologic cancers, Dr. Ring has an interest in hereditary cancers and sees patients in the High-Risk Breast and Ovarian Cancer Program.

My name is Kari Ring. I am a physician within the department of obstetrics and gynecology, specifically within the division of gynecologic oncology. In addition to my gynecologic oncology practice, I also see patients as part of the high-risk breast and ovarian cancer clinic, so for patients that are at an increased risk of cancers based on their family history or unknown mutation. I think, actually, end of life care and getting to sort of be in that longitudinal process with patients is really a special part of gynecologic oncology compared to other sort of surgical oncology sub-specialties, and I think those are really the ones that have transformed me as a physician. I'm passionate about sort of prevention and research surrounding prevention. I feel like that's a space where we can really make an impact in cancer care is helping to prevent cancers. Usually when a new patient comes to me, what we do is have a clinic visit where we sort of review your history, your previous care that you've had, we do an exam, and then we sit down and talk about sort of where to go from here, whether it's surgery or chemotherapy or further sort of workup with imaging or biopsies. The University of Virginia offers this unique patient care where we work really well together as a team, from the nurses to the physicians to sort of the core staff as well as the specialties together, so we work really closely with other surgical oncology specialists as well as our radiation oncologists, and I think sort of that unique care where we all work together really well.
