Bio & Overview
Leigh Lather, MD, is a pediatric orthopedist who cares for children with a wide range of orthopedic issues, including fractures, sports injuries, scoliosis, clubfeet, hip dysplasia and a variety of developmental disabilities. She is an assistant professor in the Division of Pediatric Orthopedics and is board-certified in pediatrics.
Born in Minnesota, Dr. Lather spent her childhood in Iowa, New Jersey and England. She completed her undergraduate studies at Duke University and earned her medical degree with honors from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her pediatric residency at the University of Virginia, serving as chief resident and a clinical instructor in pediatrics. Dr. Lather worked in private practice pediatrics in an underserved area of eastern North Carolina for thirteen years before returning to UVA for a fellowship in non-operative pediatric orthopedics. She joined the faculty in 2012.
Outside of her role at UVA, Dr. Lather spends as much time as possible with her family, all of whom enjoy cooking, reading, traveling and spending time outside, especially hiking in the mountains.

[MUSIC PLAYING] DR. LEIGH ANN LATHER: I'm Doctor Leigh Ann Lather, University of Virginia Health System, Pediatric Orthopedics. I practiced general pediatrics for several years in private practice. Then I really wanted to come back to an academic center. And I got an unexpected opportunity to train a little further, and become an orthopedist for children. I was so excited to have that opportunity in the middle of my career, to do something new, to do something more specialized, to do something that I had a real interest in. I see children of all ages, from babies to high school students. And I really like helping young athletes, helping them get back to doing what they love. And I also really like seeing the little babies. I treat clubfoot, and I treat hip dysplasia. And those are two problems that can cause real serious, lifelong disability. There are only about a dozen people in the country who do exactly what I do. I'm a pediatrician, but I happen to specialize in orthopedics for children. And there just aren't very many of us. To have the ability and the privilege to be able to help a child prevent lifelong disability is probably my favorite thing. [MUSIC PLAYING]
