Bio & Overview

Lily Cheng, MD, is a board-certified pediatric surgeon who provides care in all aspects of pediatric surgery. She has a special interest in treating children and infants with congenital colorectal diseases, including Hirschsprung disease and anorectal malformations.

She has expertise in minimally invasive surgical techniques and bowel management.

Dr. Cheng’s interest in pediatric surgery began when she had heart surgery at the age of 5. Now that she’s a mother herself, her role has even greater meaning. “It is such a special privilege and responsibility to take care of someone’s child,” she says.

“I try to take care of every patient as if they’re my own child. I want families to feel comfortable and confident in their care, knowing that I will help them get through any problem, big or small.”

Dr. Cheng earned her undergraduate degrees in bioengineering and chemistry from the University of California San Diego and her medical degree from the University of California Davis.

She completed her general surgery residency at the University of California San Francisco and her pediatric surgery fellowship at Texas Children’s Hospital. She has also completed a research fellowship in pediatric surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Cheng has awards from the National Institutes of Health, the American Pediatric Surgical Association, and the American College of Surgeons to study the mechanics of bowel function. Her research is aimed at finding better treatments for gastrointestinal diseases such as chronic idiopathic constipation and Hirschsprung disease.

In her free time, Dr. Cheng enjoys spending time with her husband, young son, and two cats.
