Bio & Overview
Mark Russell, MD, FAAD, specializes in diagnosing and treating common and rare skin cancers. He is an expert in the Mohs technique—microscopically controlled surgery to treat skin cancer — and is one of the few fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons who is also board-certified in dermatology and dermatopathology.
Dr. Russell was born and raised in central Ohio. He graduated from the Ohio State University with a BS in Nutrition and earned his MD there as well. After graduating medical school, Dr. Russell completed his internship at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, before completing his residency in dermatology at Vanderbilt University. After residency, Dr. Russell completed a fellowship in Mohs and dermatologic surgery at Vanderbilt, followed by a fellowship in dermatopathology at UVA. He then joined the faculty and is currently Professor of dermatology, otolaryngology and pathology.
Dr. Russell enjoys computers and technology, soccer, running, cycling and time with family and friends.

My name is Mark Russell. My practice centers mainly on patients with skin cancer, both common, such as squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma, as well as the more rare skin cancers. We can diagnose. We can treat. And so it seems to be very efficient, very effective, and that's very rewarding at the end of the day. We're very passionate, professionally, in terms of the patient care experience, and making patients comfortable. We know that skin cancer and cancer by itself is a very intimidating and scary word. So we make sure they're educated. We make sure they can make good, informed decisions. And when they make their decision, we walk them through the process. We are there through the whole process. The University of Virginia offers a multidisciplinary option for patients who have especially complex skin cancers. We can work as a team and bring a very comprehensive, collaborative effort to achieve very good outcomes, even the more complex patients.
