Michael Cusick, MD

Michael Cusick, MD, MHSA, is an ophthalmologist who specializes in the medical treatment of conditions that involve the retina. Some of the most common medical conditions he treats are diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration and retinal vascular diseases. His research interests include quality improvement in Ophthalmology.

Cusick completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. During his medical training, he worked as a Howard Hughes Scholar in clinical research at the National Eye Institute (NEI), National Institutes of Health (NIH). He then completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Cusick then went on to pursue a two-year retina fellowship at the Duke Eye Center in Durham, North Carolina, where he was awarded the Heed Foundation Award and was selected as the Duke Eye Center Hornaday Fellow for excellence in teaching, ethics and research. In 2020, he obtained a Masters of Health Systems Administration (MHSA) degree from Georgetown University. Cusick joined the faculty at the University of Virginia in 2020 after 10 years in private practice in Pennsylvania.
