Nassib Abou Heidar, MD, is a urologic oncologist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers affecting the urinary tract and the male reproductive organs, including bladder, kidney, and prostate cancers.
“I always take my time to understand each patient’s unique priorities and experiences so we can work together to formulate an individualized management plan,” he says.
Dr. Heidar was born to an immigrant family in Boston and raised in Beirut, Lebanon, where he was part of a tight-knit community that valued compassion and altruism.
He earned an undergraduate degree in chemistry and attended medical school at American University of Beirut, where he also completed his residencies in general surgery and genitourinary surgery and renal transplantation. While studying in Beirut, he provided care to patients from a wide variety of demographics and ethnicities, which instilled in him a passion for equitable medical care.
Dr. Heidar completed his fellowship in urologic oncology at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, New York.
“The main reason I wanted to be a doctor is to make a positive impact in people’s lives,” he says. “I am blessed to be able to wake up every day knowing that the day is a new chance to help more people.”
In his free time, he enjoys swimming, basketball, reading, and playing the piano.

Meet Nassib Heidar, MD
I'm Nassib Abou Heidar. I'm one of the urologists at UVA. I specialize in the treatment of urologic oncology and urologic cancers. So I'm a cancer surgeon who treats patients with cancers of the urological system, meaning kidneys, ureter, bladder, urethra, and prostate, as well as testicles. So growing up, altruism was a very important value that was instilled in me and being part of a community and helping the community was one of the values that I really grew into when I was younger. And I saw that medicine as a practice was one of the fields that would really allow me to give back to the community and wake up every morning knowing that I'm helping my community. I'm passionate about really helping patients because I know that whenever a patient gets a diagnosis of cancer, the world seems to be collapsing, and I want to be the one who really shows them the best management strategy and helps them along this path of potentially healing them and curing them of their cancer. I think patients should come to UVA because we have the cutting-edge technology, we have the surgical expertise, we have the medical skills, and we have the ancillary programs that a lot of universities don't have. And all of these elements talk to each other to provide multidisciplinary management for patients. And that's what patients should expect coming to UVA, and that's why my family members come to UVA as well.
