Richard Hall, MD, MS, is a thoracic oncologist who specializes in diagnosing and treating lung cancer, including non-small cell lung cancer, small cell lung cancer, thymoma, and mesothelioma.
His research includes the development of immunotherapies, targeted therapies, and combination treatments for lung cancer.
Dr. Hall is a native of Texas and earned his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University. He attended medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas.
He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Virginia, where he served as chief resident. He returned to UVA after completing his fellowship training at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
Dr. Hall was the UVA hematology/oncology fellowship program director from 2017–2024. He is the recipient of UVA’s 2024 Department of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award and the 2024 Michael E. Williams Fellowship Teaching Award.

My name is Richard Hall. I'm a medical oncologist here at the University of Virginia. My specialty is treating cancers that arise in the chest, particularly lung cancer as well as thymic cancers and mesothelioma. I'm passionate about giving the best options for patients for treating patients with lung cancer with the newest therapies and trying to improve both their quality of life as well as their length of life for as long as possible. For our new patients, you can expect a fairly well oiled team that functions in a very collaborative fashion. We work well with our surgical team. We work well with our radiation oncology team, so new patients can expect to have a whole group of people that are available to help care for them. I think patients should come to UVA because we have some of the best clinical trial options available. We have a great team approach to care. We have excellent collaborative colleagues such as radiation and surgery that we can also offer patients.
