Highlights
Dr. Stephen Culp Video Profile
Hi, I'm Stephen Culp. I'm a urologist here at the University of Virginia. Well, my interest in medicine probably came about right after I started college at Emory. But ultimately what spurred me towards oncology and research was my father developed kidney cancer my senior year at college, and unfortunately passed away from it. So, that kind of spurred me along in life to specialize in urologic oncology. My care philosophy is multifocal. I believe that each patient is different. They're their own person. It's important to treat them as such. Treat them with respect. Be honest with them. Involve them in the decision making. I get to know my new patients by introducing myself, telling them a little about me, my interests, and then hopefully listening their own interest, where the come from, who their family and friends are, what they do in life, try to find a common thread so that we can speak freely and honestly with one another. Ultimately, once I get to know a patient, it becomes more jovial. It's more down to earth. The things that make me enjoy my work at UVA are the people, not only the physicians, but also the patients. Developing relationships, not only with my colleagues, but also with the patients themselves. I have many long-lasting friendships that I've born out of treating these patients and that makes me gratified.
