Dr. Brockmeier joined the UVA Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2010. He specializes in sports medicine and shoulder surgery. This includes arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and knee with a specific focus on sports injuries of the upper extremity. He has advanced experience in arthroscopic shoulder techniques, including arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic labral repair and shoulder stabilization and reconstructive procedures of the shoulder and AC joint. In addition, Dr. Brockmeier specializes in reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, including total shoulder replacement, humeral resurfacing, revision shoulder arthroplasty and reverse shoulder arthroplasty.
Dr. Brockmeier serves as team physician for the University of Virginia as well as for James Madison University. Prior to joining the UVA faculty, Dr. Brockmeier completed medical school and orthopaedic residency training at Georgetown University followed by a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. He then spent three years in practice in Charlotte, North Carolina, specializing in sports medicine, arthroscopy, and shoulder surgery. While in Charlotte, he served as team physician for the Charlotte Bobcats and was an orthopedic consultant for a number of high schools and youth baseball organizations. Dr. Brockmeier moved to Charlottesville to pursue an academic career with a research emphasis on clinical outcomes in the area of arthroscopic and open shoulder procedures. Currently, he is the principal investigator on clinical trials evaluating scaffold augmentation of rotator cuff repair and stemless total shoulder arthroplast.
Outside of work, Dr. Brockmier spends as much time as possible with his wife, Kristin, and their three children, Ben, Jack and Paige. He enjoys the outdoors, hiking, cycling, golf, tennis and skiing.

My name is Steve Brockmeier. I'm an orthopedic surgeon here at the University of Virginia specializing in sports medicine and shoulder reconstructive surgery. I'm a team physician for UVA Athletics. Between myself and a couple of other physicians we manage a group of over 800 student athletes here at the university. I additionally serve as the team physician for a couple of area high schools. I specialize in the management of healthy and active individuals who are either elite athletes or active people of all ages. In the knee we generally we take care of patients with ligament injuries, cartilage injuries, or injuries to the accessory structures like the meniscus in the knee. I generally take care of people for shoulder disorders that span the generations, so a soup to nuts practice in shoulder surgery. The reason that most of us go into medicine, and certainly this is the case for me, is the ability to be able to care for a patient, whether that be a patient whose terminally ill, or in my circumstances a patient who has an injury or has a disorder that's limiting their ability to walk or to be active or to do the things that they want or need to do in life, and to be able to make an impact and allow them to recover from that injury and get back to being an active individual and a healthy individual in a pain free way. That's really what day in and day out keeps me coming back to work. I think that it's really important for a patient to not only understand what's wrong with them, but to understand what the options are to treat it, and what the expectations would be should they desire to proceed with a specific type of treatment. I'll tell you that every single member or our staff plays a critical role in patient care, and that team based aspect is really one of the things that I think we do the best.
