Vanessa L Smith, MD
Clinical and Laboratory Pathology
Bio & Overview
Vanessa Smith, MD, is a pathologist who specializes in molecular genetic pathology and neuropathology.
“I’m the person behind your diagnosis,” she says.
Originally from northern California, Dr. Smith first worked in the field of molecular biology as an intern at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory while still in high school.
She attended Stanford University, where she majored in biology, and received her medical degree from University of Illinois Chicago College of Medicine at Peoria, Illinois. Dr. Smith completed an anatomic and clinical pathology residency at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, where she remained for her fellowship training in neuropathology and molecular genetic pathology.
“I find that my two fellowships complement each other well — even more so now that so many neuropathology diagnoses are dependent upon specific molecular findings,” she says.
