Bio & Overview
Venkat Perumal, MD, grew up in India and attended medical school there, earning a master’s in orthopedic surgery in addition to his primary medical degree. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery in India and came to United States for fellowship and specialized training in foot and ankle surgery. He completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopedic surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, followed by a fellowship in orthopedic traumatology at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. He then moved to Charlottesville for a fellowship in adult reconstruction, foot and ankle, at UVA. He stayed on to join the faculty at UVA in April, 2013.
Dr. Perumal is married and has two children. He spends his free time with his family, and also enjoys playing chess, camping, biking, hiking, attending spiritual meetings and volunteering in free medical camps and homeless shelters.

VENKAT PERUMAL: I'm Venkat Perumal, orthopedic surgeon, specializing in foot and ankle surgery in UVA. We do ankle-- you know, take care of ankle arthritis, or you know any foot arthritis. We do ankle replacements. We take care of sports injuries, ligament tears, ligament injuries. And we take care of the deformities of the foot. Well, when we see new patients, they always-- they could come with a deformity of the foot, or they could come for pain in their foot. We'll try to like treat them first with non-operative options. And if that does not take care of the problem, if surgery is required, we can always do the surgery and get them back to the pre-injured level. The foot is a complex-- it has a complex anatomy, very-- you know, it like has various joints, various tendons. If you have a foot problem, it'll remind you to take care of it every step you do. So we love to take care of these complex problems when they-- when it happens, when it comes to treatment of the foot and ankle problems.
