Xuemei Huang, MD, PhD

Xuemei Huang, MD, PhD, is a neurologist who specializes in diagnosing and treating Parkinson’s disease, tremors, and other progressive neurodegenerative diseases.

Her research focuses on understanding the causes and improving treatments for Parkinson’s and similar disorders. Her approach includes using specialized brain imaging and sophisticated clinical assessments.

“I see my job as doing the best I know how to help you squeeze more joy out of what this life has to offer,” she says. “You will call me ‘the nosiest doctor ever!’ I want to know everything about you because this will give me a better understanding of how I might be able to help you.”

Huang was born and raised in China and was the first in her family to attend high school and college.

While she loved math, her parents encouraged her to become a doctor. She earned her medical degree from Beijing Medical University. She then came to the U.S. to earn her doctorate in pharmacology and toxicology at Purdue University.

Huang went on to earn a fellowship in clinical pharmacology at the University of Colorado. She then completed her neurology residency at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and her medical internship at the University of Washington, along with a movement disorder fellowship at Emory University.

She was previously on the faculty at UNC and Pennsylvania State University and was the founding director of Penn State's Translational Brain Research Center.
