Astrud Leyva, MD, MBA, is from Houston, Texas. She attended Houston Baptist University, graduating with honors (magna cum laude) with majors in biology and biochemistry/molecular biology. She attended medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, where she also completed her internal medicine residency and stayed on for another year as a chief medical resident and assistant professor of medicine. She then underwent fellowship training in rheumatology at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.
Dr. Leyva was in practice as a rheumatologist and was a clinical assistant professor of medicine in Temple, Texas, prior to joining UVA Physicians Group in October 2016. She also completed an executive MBA in healthcare management from the University of Texas at Dallas while working full-time.
She enjoys the challenges presented by the management of complex autoimmune diseases in the field of rheumatology and values the long-term relationships formed with her patients. She also has an interest in the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound in rheumatology and has earned her RhMSUS certification from the American College of Rheumatology.
In her free time, she loves spending time with her husband and kitties, visiting her family in Texas, reading and spending time outdoors.
