Cawood Fitzhugh, MSN, FNP-C, is a certified family nurse practitioner specializing in women’s health.
Ms. Fitzhugh earned her bachelor’s in nursing from UVA and worked as a registered nurse for close to a decade, primarily in labor and delivery. She returned to UVA for her master’s in nursing and has been a nurse practitioner since 1997, working in obstetrics and gynecology, family medicine and integrative medicine. She joined the Department of Family Medicine at UVA in 2015.
In addition to her clinical work, Ms. Fitzhugh is an adjunct faculty member at the School of Nursing and is involved in the school’s Compassionate Care Initiative, which works to help nurses develop resiliency. She is also trained in mindfulness-based stress reduction, and is an instructor at the Mindfulness Center at the School of Medicine. From 1995-2000, Ms. Fitzhugh was appointed and served on the Maternal Child Health Council for two governors, helping craft legislation that enhanced collaboration between OB/GYN and family physicians, nurse practitioners and certified nurse midwives in Virginia.
