Assistant Professor of Dermatology

A dermatologist who cares for patients of all ages, Darren Guffey, MD, specializes in procedural dermatology. His expertise includes surgery for hidradenitis suppurativa, nail procedures, benign and malignant excisions, as well as Mohs surgery, particularly cutaneous oncology and reconstruction of Mohs surgical defects. He also has extensive experience with systemic medications for the treatment of inflammatory dermatoses.

As the associate program director for the UVA Dermatology Residency Program, Guffey is actively involved in graduate medical education. His medical training began at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina, where he attended medical school and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. Guffey then completed an internship in internal medicine at UVA, followed by a dermatology residency.

During his residency, Guffey developed an evidence-based approach to treating patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis. He also was awarded the American Academy of Dermatology’s Native American Health Services grant, which allowed him to travel to Chinle, Arizona, to provide dermatologic care to indigent patients living on a Navajo reservation. Guffey returned to UVA once again to pursue a Mohs fellowship.

Happily married with two young boys, Guffey grew up on a poultry farm in a community in southern North Carolina. Today, he spends his free time with family, running, hiking, playing basketball, mountain biking, cooking, and watching college and professional basketball and football.
