Edward C. Nemergut, MD, is the Frederic A. Berry Professor of Anesthesiology and a professor of neurosurgery, as well as a vice-chair in the Department of Anesthesiology. He cares primarily for adult patients undergoing brain, spine or transplant surgery.
Born and raised in Chicago, Nemergut received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Indiana University. He completed residency training in anesthesiology at University of Virginia, where he has been on faculty since 2002.
In addition to patient care, Nemergut has had a career-long interest in education, and founded the Medical Education Research Group to promote more precise research in medical education. He also co-founded OpenAnesthesia.org and SelfStudy, a learning optimization technology company.
His accomplishments as an educator and innovator have been recognized with multiple awards, including the Innovation in Teaching Award presented by the International Anesthesia Research Society. Nemergut currently serves as the executive section editor for medical education for the peer-reviewed journal Anesthesia & Analgesia and editor-in-chief of OpenAnesthesia.org.
In his free time, he enjoys music, art, reading and spending time with his family.
