Dr. Smith serves as the medical director of spinal cord injury rehabilitation at UVA HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital. He is also the associate program director of the UVA Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency program, and he created and continues to serve as co-director of the residency program's musculoskeletal ultrasound training program. He is a member of the UVA School of Medicine Academy of Distinguished Educators.
Dr. Smith was born and raised in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. After earning his bachelor’s degree in English at Dartmouth College, he returned to Columbus, where he completed his medical school education and internship at Ohio State. He trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Mayo Clinic. During his third year at Mayo he served as chief resident for the PM&R residency program. He then completed a fellowship in spinal cord injury medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, dividing his training among MetroHealth (Cleveland's Level 1 Trauma Center and SCI Model System Center at the time), Cleveland Clinic and Cleveland's VA medical center. He joined UVA in 2011.
Outside of work, Dr. Smith enjoys spending time with his wife and three kids. He is an active member of a local church and enjoys various sports.
