Biography

Dr. John MacKnight is a Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia. After completing his undergraduate work at the University of Delaware, Dr. MacKnight graduated cum laude from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He then completed categorical internal medicine residency training at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center before undertaking fellowship training in primary care sports medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He returned to the University of Virginia as a faculty member in internal medicine in 1996. Since his original clinical appointment, Dr. MacKnight is now medical director and primary care team physician for the University of Virginia athletic department. Through his various clinical duties, Dr. MacKnight has a wide array of teaching responsibilities which include musculoskeletal education for third and fourth year medical students as well as residents in internal medicine. In addition to these teaching duties, Dr. MacKnight has published and edited a number of papers and chapters in sports medicine literature. He lives in Charlottesville with his wife and four children. Dr. MacKnight enjoys music, sporting events and family travel.
